Shukri Janagale is a self taught mixed media artist exploring the realm of digital art. Since her return to her motherland Somalia, Shukri has been blessed with a sense of peace. This is the healthiest she's ever felt, spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally. This nuance of balance has ignited a surge of creativity she hasn’t experience since her teens. After a 10 year hiatus she has returned with a vengeance. Kicking thing off with her first Solo Art Show “Dhaqan soo Celis” (Bringing the Culture Back) in 2018. She is inspired heavily by African Cultures and textiles. She continues to challenge her capacity daily by committing to a 365 Art Challenge.

We asked Shukri what being an African Artist means to her and here’s what she had to share:

"Being an African Artist means being influenced by all things African. For example the Sankofa Bird symbolizes the need to remember our past so we may move forward. Which is exactly what I did, I moved back to Somalia pulled inspiration from my ancestors and am now committed to reflecting my culture through art in this digital age. I see this as a way to give back to my ancestors by digitizing my culture for the generations to come."
